Upper Ea Soup Lake is the biggest artifical fresh water lake in Daklak province but smaller then Lower Ayun Lake in Gia Lai province.
The lake is located in Chu Ma Lanh commune, Ea Sup district, Daklak province, about 7 km away from Ea Sup town to the West. The lake was formed by blocking the Ea Sup stream and has been used since 2004, with an area of 1,500 hectares (3 times bigger than Lak Lake), this lake might maintain 146 millions of cubic meter. As designed, this lake is used for irrigation of 9,455 hectares of rice paddies and other plantations of 7 districts: Ea Le, Ea Bung, Ea Drong, Ea Roc, Chu Ma Lanh, Ea Lop, Ea Tmot and Wa Sup town.
The climate of this area is influenced by tropical monsoon climate of Central Highlands area, there are two distinct seasons: Rainy and sunny seasons. As this lake has a big water surface area, so, it is much cooler than other surrounding areas though mainly of the region is open dry forest.
Upper Ea Sup Lake not only has big values for irrigation and aquatic products but also has actractions for tourism activities. The advantage of this lake is its big water surface area staying stable in dry season, a peninsula with forest and covered by big trees. From the view of main dam, you can enjoy great natural forests with multi of fauna and flora system. It is worth and attractive for tourists to have a trip for visiting a second big dam in the Central Highlands.
This is a part that can not be lacked in the tourism project of “ Central Highlands Green Path”, this kind of tour is rated very interesting, with the starting point in Danang, you get through Kontum, Gialai then follow province road 681 to reach Dak Lak province via Ea Soup town for a full stop at Upper Ea Sup Lake.
