On November 14th, Dak Lak Provincial People’s Committee (PPC) held a conference on summing up the 2017-2018 coffee crop, deploying the plan for the 2018-2019 crop under the chair of Mr. Nguyen Hai Ninh, alternate member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Chairman of the PPC. The conference was attended by representatives of Ministries of Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam Cocoa Coffee Association, the State Bank of Vietnam and other departments, sectors and localities in the province.

In the 2017-2018 coffee crop, the total coffee cultivation area of Dak Lak reached 204.808 ha, an increase of 1,071 hectares compared to the previous crop. In particular, the harvested coffee area achieved 187,279 ha, down 4,204 ha. The average yield was 24.5 quintals/ha, increased by 1.2 quintals/ha. The total output reached 459,785 tonnes, 11,975 tonnes higher than the previous crop. 12 companies are entitled to use Certificates of Geographical Indications for the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee trademark with a total area of 15,612.70 ha, registered output of 48,691 tonnes per year. By the end of 2017-2018 crop, the province has replanted 26,818 ha of coffee, accounting for 64.48% of the plan. In 2018 alone, 4,862 ha of coffee have completely replaced, reaching 71.09% of the plan.
Dak Lak exported 191,169 tonnes of coffee, a decrease of 5%, making up 10.6% of total coffee output nationwide. Export turnover reached over US$365 million, decreasing by US$ 80.2 million, accounting for nearly 10.5% of total coffee export turnover nationwide. 4,330 tonnes of instant coffee have been exported, reaching US$ 26.8 million. Geographical Indications for Buon Ma Thuot Coffee trademark have been protected in 12 countries and territories in the form of geographical indications, origin of products, brand certification and collective brand. At present, DakLak is preparing a registration application to gain a protected geographical indication for Buon Ma Thuot coffee in the EU market.

In the 2018 – 2019 crop, Dak Lak has 204,577 ha of coffee, down 231 ha compared to the last crop. The coffee yield is estimated at 24.4 quintals/ha, total output stands at 464,175 tonnes. Dak Lak has continued to maintain the coffee area, to focus on replanting coffee trees, to apply solutions aiming to improve productivity, output and quality to meet export requirements.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Hai Ninh stressed that coffee trees is considered as the main crop of Dak Lak. Therefore, Dak Lak has paid much attention to coffee planting areas, coffee processing areas. In the next crop, the province will propose the Ministries, central agencies to assist local enterprises in exporting coffee. At the same time, it is expected that the Departments, sectors and enterprises coordinate together to organize the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival 2019 aiming to enhance the value of coffee, especially specialty coffee; promoting deep-processing projects, seeking new markets; taking advantage of human resources, finance, preferential policies for loans for enterprises, loans for re-cultivation, investment in the application of science and technology to improve the productivity, quality and value of coffee products in the market.
Delegates at the conference also discussed several solutions to overcome the current difficulties of the coffee sector such as: effectively implementing the sustainable coffee development project in Dak Lak province to 2020; encouraging organizations and individuals to accelerate the plan to replant coffee trees, using new varieties of coffee for high yield and quality; building the link between the four houses to bring the coffee industry in depth; intensifying the promotion and calling for investors into intensive coffee processing projects; assisting the enterprises in updating information about price, seeking and expanding export markets, connecting and boosting business cooperation with domestic and foreign partners.
